$100K giveaway major highlight of six-week Digicel promotion
FOR 42 consecutive days, Digicel says its customers looked forward to winning a vacation and daily prizes of smartphones, prepaid plans and credit, and $100,000.
In fact, 4,200 of them got lucky from the pot of prizes that were part of the company’s ‘Set Fi Di Summa’ promotion, which was launched on July 20, 2018.
Digicel, in a release last Friday, said the promotion ended on a high at the Urban Development Corporation’s ‘Harbour Fest’ summer extravaganza on the Kingston Waterfront recently, where it awarded its final winner, Henrece James, $100,000 plus a vacation for two to the Bahamas.
James, who the company said has been a customer for 10 years, will be making her first trip to the Bahamas.
According to the release, the woman recalled getting that “winning feeling” after purchasing credit to gain entry into the draw.
“I came down here today very stressed and decided to come over and check out Harbour Fest. I said to my daughter, Kimberly, ‘I’m going to be the winner tonight, in Jesus’ name’.”
Weeks earlier, 35-year-old farmer Nigel Jones, who is from Trinityville in St, Thomas, won the $100,000 daily prize at the Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show in Clarendon. The cash reportedly came just in time for him to get his two children ready for the new school year, and carry out small repairs to his home.
Digicel said Jones joined a wide cross-section of its customers who expressed shock when notified about winning the big daily cash prize or other giveaways. The list also includes the promotion’s first winner, Earl Mattis, a 64-year-old retired mason.
The first order of business for Mattis was to pay 10 per cent of his winnings in tithes; the rest would go towards paying down medical expenses.
“From I came back from America in 2014 it’s always been Digicel, so I am very happy to be the very first winner in the promotion. I wish all the other customers the best of luck this summer,” Mattis said on July 20, 2018.
Public relations and communications manager at Digicel, Elon Parkinson, commented: “We set out to make summer 2018 the best ever for our customers by making it easy for them to win the things we know they love. And from all accounts, they’ve enjoyed the thrill of winning, whether it was for themselves or being part of celebrating with winners at our road shows across the country or via social media.”
