PNP VP candidates hope for united party
KINGSTON, Jamaica — All six People’s National Party (PNP) officials going up for the four vice president positions in the party hope for victory but are ultimately batting for a united party at the end of the day.
The six officials — incumbents Dr Fenton Ferguson, Dr Kenneth Wykeham McNeill, Angela Brown Burke; as well as newcomers Phillip Paulwell, Mikael Phillips and Senator Damion Crawford — are competing for the four places in the second-tier leadership of the party that officially celebrates 80 years of existence this weekend with its Annual Conference, the organisation’s highest decision making arm.
McNeill told OBSERVER ONLINE at the elections, which are currently underway at the National Arena in Kingston, that the campaign has showed that democracy is still alive in the party and at the end of the process “no matter what the results we will all unite”.
Phillips reiterated the general stance outlining that the message his campaign sought to bring across was “one mission, one vision.”
Ferguson in the meantime said he has been tried, tested and is a loyal and faithful member of the party.
Crawford, who has high hopes of walking away with a seat despite not being a Member of Parliament, said that the aim of the party is to win an election that it’s predicted to lose following the loss of the last general election that it was predicted to win.
At the same time Brown Burke said her campaign focused on reminding the delegates of “who we are as a party and our democratic and socialist traditions of putting people first”.
Paulwell earlier expressed confidence that he will taste victory at the end of the day and that his “I connect” team has put in the work and will outlast this campaign for vice presidency because the Jamaican people are resonating with it.
