LUCEA, Hanover — Three top-of-the-table clashes, including defending champions Rusea’s High against former champions Frome Technical in Zone B, will highlight today’s final set of first-round, first-leg matches in the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition.

Clarendon College and Lennon High, both on nine points from three wins each, will meet in Zone H, while Knox College and Holmwood Technical, both one seven points at the top of Zone G, will also meet.

Thirty-five games are scheduled for today’s round of matches, where five schools will put up their perfect win records on the line.

Yesterday Garvey Maceo, the 2007 champions, became the first school in the competition to win their fifth-straight, after beating Winston Jones 4-0 in the Zone M game that was brought forward from today.

Andre Gayle scored twice for Garvey Maceo High while Jermaine Muirhead and Deandre Cunningham both got a goal as the winners raced to 15 points, more than double Denbigh High and Glenmuir High, who are both on seven points.

Tevin Cheese scored two as Dinthill Technical beat Tacius Golding 7-0 in Zone K, as the leaders have scored 14 goals in a three-day span and took over sole leadership of the zone ahead of Charlemont High.

After 12 straight losses in Zone A dating back to last year, Irwin High battled to a 3-3 draw against Maldon High, while Cambridge High scored their first win of the season, edging Merlene Ottey High 1-0 in Zone B.

In today’s feature game, Rusea’s High, who are coming off a big 6-0 win over Merlene Ottey, face Frome Technical, who will be playing their first game in a week since they beat Merlene Ottey 5-0.

Rusea’s High have won all four games played and lead Zone B with 12 points, three more than Frome Technical who won their first three games, with both schools combining for over 30 goals.

Frome Technical have scored five goals in each of their three wins, led by Giovauni Mittoo who has scored a hat-trick in each of their games and is expected to lead the attack today against a Rusea’s High defence that have only given up three goals.

Rusea’s High are unbeaten in their last four games against Frome, who last beat the defending champions in the final game in the 2015 season.

Last season’s beaten finalists Clarendon College are off to a fast start with 13 goals in their first three wins, almost twice the seven goals scored by Lennon High, who have also won their first three games.

Clarendon College have won their last three games against Lennon, the only team to beat them in Zone H in the last two years, but will be favourites to win today.

Cornwall College have won their first three games in Zone A and will face rivals St James High today at Jarrett Park.

After winning their first two games, St James High have picked up just a point from their last two games and are in third place in the group, just two points behind Cornwall College and Green Pond who are both on nine points.

Records mean little when these two fierce rivals meet, and Cornwall College have improved with each game played so far and will be gunning for another win today.

Green Island will meet Hopewell High in a Zone B game that will be crucial to the ambitions of both teams.

Both are on six points and Green Island have won their last two games by 4-0 margins, while Hopewell High are coming off a 3-1 win in their last game.

Herbert Morrison Technical will be gunning for a third-straight win, after losing their first two, when they travel to Muschett High who are on five points — one behind the Montego Bay team.

Herbert Morrison won both games against Muschett High last year but will be without Tajae Bronstroph, who was sent off in their win over Holland High on Wednesday.
