Singer/producer Colin “Iley Dread” Levy and the University of t he West Indies (UWI) have issued statements on the death of Shem Cole, son of audio engineer David Cole, and grandson of former national footballer Alan “Skill” Cole and singer Judy Mowatt.

The second-year economics student at the UWI was killed in an auto accident on September 11, along the Palisadoes Road in Kingston. He was 20 years old.

Cole had just returned from the United States and had been picked up minutes earlier at Norman Manley International Airport.

Iley Dread and Mowatt were completing the video shoot for their song Miracle when they got news of Cole’s death.

“It was really a great vibe with video director Ras Kassa and Ras Tingle and then just as they were wrapping up the last shoot in the hills the police called with the shocking news,” said Iley Dread.

A tragic irony is that the visual’s opening scene shows Mowatt receiving a phone call from her son, telling her that he is in a lot of trouble.

“And then, can you imagine that the shoot ends with a real life tragic phone call of this magnitude. Right now, I am still processing it. If it hit me like this, I can just imagine the family,” said Iley Dread.

In addition to extending condolences to Cole’s family and friends, the UWI said it had flown its flags at half mast on Wednesday and would do so on his funeral day.

Cole was a second-year undergraduate student pursing a Bachelor of Science in Economics in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Like his grandfather Alan “Skill” Cole, young Cole also excelled at football. Skill Cole is arguably Jamaica’s best footballer and was a confidant and manager of Marley, who died in 1981.

David Cole is the audio engineer for Grammy Award-winning artiste, Damian “Junior Gong” Marley, one of Bob Marley’s children.

Shem’s uncle, Allie Cole, died on September 10, 2017.
