LONDON, England (CMC) — Bermuda captain Reggie Lambe opened his account for Cambridge United with a superb first-half brace, but his goals went to waste as Jamaican substitute Jamille Matt replied with two of his own when Newport County roared back to win their English League Two match 4-2 at Rodney Parade on Saturday.

Lambe, 27, fired the visitors ahead after four minutes with a right-foot shot from outside the area into the corner of the net and doubled the lead after 21 minutes with another right-foot effort from inside the box.

But Cambridge’s grip on the game was weakened when they conceded a penalty on the stroke of half-time, converted by Mickey Demetriou. It was the first of four goals in an 18-minute spell for the home side.

Padraig Amond levelled the scores in the 49th minute before 28-year-old Matt, who came on in the 39th minute, sealed all three points for Newport with headers in the 60th and 63rd minutes

Newport are second in the table, three points behind leaders Lincoln City, while Cambridge are down in 20th place, three points above the relegation zone.

Newport County manager Mike Flynn said: “I’ll be honest, it’s not good for my blood pressure the way we started; it wasn’t what we’re about. You start fearing the worst and there were poor goals.

“We made a big decision to put Jamille on — we went — brave and it changed the game. It was a definite penalty and goals change games and we showed an abundance of character,” he reasoned.

“I’m paid to make these decisions and I hope I can get more right than we get wrong, but apart from the two goals we were excellent. We put a lot of effort in and showed the fans how much it meant to them.”

Cambridge boss Joe Dunne said: “Being 2-0 up and losing 4-2 it shouldn’t be happening — but unfortunately it has.”

Meanwhile, Bermuda striker Nahki Wells, on loan from Premier League club Burnley, is still waiting to score his first goal for Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers, who dropped to 18th place on the table after losing 3-0 at Swansea City.
