With the presence of the reigning Horse of the Year in the Cal’s Tomato Ketchup Gold Cup, trainer Anthony Nunes is hoping for some racing luck for his charges Siempre Bueno and Houdini’s Magic when the race unfolds tomorrow.

The 46th running of the Grade One for a purse of $3 million, ventures over seven furlongs (1,400m).

Siempre Bueno with 10 starts this year holds only two victories going five furlongs (1,000m) straight and six furlongs (1,200m).

However, seven furlongs (1,400m) will not really hamper him as the chestnut gelding ran a good third in the Eros Trophy (seven furlongs), finishing third by 6 ½ lengths behind She’s A Maneater and Money Magnet on July 28.

Houdini’s Magic, on the other hand, holds a victory over She’s A Maneater when he brought home the Viceroy Trophy over nine furlongs (1,800m) on June 30. Since then he has been dormant but he is that type of horse that shows up when it matters most.

“This is horse racing and the race has to be run and that is why trainers prepare and enter their horses in case certain horses do not run up to their ability. They are all flesh and blood but if everything is normal and well it is extremely difficult to beat She’s A Maneater.

“She is the best horse in our country and even at the handicaps, I believe that she is way better than the field and something unforeseen will have to happen for her to be beaten and therefore, I think it’s her race to lose,” Nunes said.

Nunes also said that his charges are in good condition and are ready.

“My two horses are fine and they are expected to run to the best of their ability and if that is good on the day so be it but that is left to be seen. They are happy and well and they will show up ready to race. Both riders know the horses and all we are hoping for is a little racing luck and see what happens,” Nunes informed.
