Three from three for Corazon in Pick-3
AFTER her win in the Pick-3 “Super Challenge” Trophy on Saturday (November 24, 2018), trainer Anthony Nunes has high hopes for Corazon heading into the Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL) Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes next month.
The Jamaica Two-Year-Old, the third and final jewel in the SVL-sponsored native-bred Two-Year-Old Triple Crown series, will be run over a mile (1,600m) for a purse of $4 million on December 26 (Boxing Day).
It was expected to be her sternest test to date but Corazon made the task look effortless as she easily brushed aside rivals by 1 1/4 lengths over seven furlongs (1,400m), winning in a time of 1:26.3. Lady Blue was second and Juice Man third.
“The performance by Corazon to win the Pick-3 was tough but very good. We are slowly but surely stretching her out as on last she showed that going 6 ½ furlongs that she wouldn’t have any problem with seven furlongs. She is such a calm filly, not-excitable at all.
“Even though she got speed, she will relax beautifully in a race and in fact, I was getting a little bit worried, as when she left the three-furlong point she seemed too relaxed for my liking and Dick (Cardenas) had to say to her “come on, it’s time to pick this up”, and I think she responded well,” Nunes offered.
Bred by Blue Pepsi Lodge – My Heartbeat, Nunes was confident that Corazon would get the mile of the Two-Year-Old Stakes.
“I think she is showing me that she will get a mile. I am not telling you that she is a big stayer but I think that certainly, she will be able to go the mile,” said Nunes.
As expected, Lady Blue (Anthony Thomas) shot into the lead over Phenom (Dane Nelson), with Corazon (Dick Cardenas) in third after the start.
Leaving the half mile Corazon quickly crept upon the leaders, but in the lane Lady Blue refused to give up. Corazon found extra, however, and powered away for her third win from as many starts.
