Reggae Girlz grouped with Australia, Brazil and Italy for 2019 Women’s World Cup
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz will face top seeds Australia as well as Brazil and Italy in Group C of the 2019 women’s World Cup next summer in France.
The draw, which determined the group stage for the 24 teams set to play in football’s premier tournament, was held Saturday at a gala event in Paris.
The Girlz created history by becoming the first Caribbean team to qualify for the Women’s World Cup when they got by Panama 4-2 on penalties, after playing out a 2-2 stalemate in full and extra time in the Concacaf Women’s Championship third-place play-off.
Old rivals England and Scotland will meet each other in their opening game in Nice, France on June 9 after being placed in Group D alongside Argentina and Japan.
Reigning champions United States, which beat Japan lost 5-2 in the 2015 final in Vancouver, were drawn in Group F along with Sweden, Thailand and tournament newcomers Chile.
Tournament hosts France are in Group A along with South Korea, Norway and Nigeria.
Corinne Diacre’s side will play South Korea in Paris in the opening game on June 7, while the final of the 24-team competition will be held in Lyon on July 7 next year.
