FALMOUTH, Trelawny— The multi-million-dollar Champion Plaza being constructed on eight acres of land on Market St in Falmouth is expected to be completed within the next three months.

According to Martin Liao, a director of Lin Yun Forest Cloud Company Ltd, the developers of the commercial centre, the facility will accommodate a wide variety of businesses.

“There will be restaurants, supermarket, we are looking at banks, pharmacy… and several others have expressed interest,” Liao told the Jamaica Observer West at the recent opening of KFC restaurant on a section of the property, which represents an investment of over $200 million.

Liao, who asked not to be photographed, added that the section now under construction entails over “100,000 square feet of building,” noting that the first phase of the development is being done on five acres of the property.

The centre, he said, is to have roughly 280 parking spaces and several amenities for customers’ comfort.

Over the last several years, the town of Falmouth and its environs have seen massive infrastructural development.

These include the construction of the $7.5 billion cruise ship pier, the development of an artisan village at the Hampden Wharf, which is being funded by the Tourism Enhancement Fund to the tune of $700 million, the construction of the $350 million Falmouth Municipal Market, the Holland, Florence Hall and Stonebrook housing schemes, as well as the construction and rehabilitation of a number of houses and business places.

Plans are also being finalised by the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) for the development of a multi-million-dollar commercial centre at the site of the old market in the town.

And just recently, the PAJ funded a $300 million streetscape project in the town and plans are afoot to expend millions more on a number of other streets there.

Laio said his company “sees the potential in Falmouth”, and as such decided to construct the commercial centre in the north western town.

Mayor of Falmouth Councillor Colin Gager noted that the construction of the centre is a testament that the town is poised for “great things.”

“Falmouth has seen tremendous advancements in tourism, housing development and business. Indeed, Falmouth is bringing Jamaica closer to the realisation of Vision 2030,” the mayor argued.

“We host one of the best cruise ship piers and host one of the largest vessel. As a town, we are increasingly making strides in tourism, and our people are definitely seeing the ripple effects and benefits.”

Gager argued that on completion, the Champion Plaza will become the hub of commercial activities in Falmouth.
