JLP celebrates life of former MP Euphemia Williams
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has extended condolences to the family and friends of former Member of Parliament Euphemia Williams who passed away recently in New York.
Williams is remembered as a strategist and trailblazer among regional women in politics, the JLP said in its statement. In 1980, Williams created history in defeating then Deputy Prime Minister P J Patterson in what was then, the South Eastern Westmoreland constituency. She defeated Patterson by 1055 votes the JLP recalled in its statement.
Williams’ victory over Patterson on her third attempt in a traditional People’s National Party seat was likened by party officers to climbing Mount Everest, the JLP said.
