Smooth sailing

KC, XLCR cop Anthrick Corporate Area Championship

Kingston College (KC) and Excelsior High Girls were crowned champions of the Digicel Anthrick Corporate Area Championship, and walked away with $250,000 each.

KC amassed 446 and were 94 points clear of Calabar High with 352. Jamaica College were third on 341 with Excelsior High Bboys fourth with 123. Wolmer’s Boys’ completed the top five with 104 points. It was the third Corporate Area title for KC following victories in 2016 and 2017.

Excelsior Girls repelled the challenge of Immaculate High and totalled 314.5 points, and were 82 points ahead of Immaculate Conception High with 232.5. The Queens School finished third with 194 ahead of fourth-placed Wolmer’s Girls with 171. The Convent of Mercy Alpha finished fifth with 139.5 points.

KC, which started the day with a 12-point lead, quickly put daylight between themselves and the chasing pack, picking up 31 points in the 400m hurdles. Jayden Brown won the Class two event in 52.78 ahead of his teammate rayon Campbell in 52.98. The promising Jeremy Bembridge of Tarrant High was third in 53.39.

KC’s Romel Plummer dipped below the Class One record, clocking an impressive 51.08 and won ahead of Calabar’s Anthony Danvers with 51.72. KC’s Shantamoi Brown was third in 52.23.

Excelsior’s standout Ackera Nugent won the girls’ 400m hurdles open in a record 59.80 ahead of Shenell Tucker of Convent of Mercy Alpha with 1:02.45. She also went below the previous record.

Anthony Willis of KC, who broke the Class Three long jump record, returned and erased the high jump record with a leap of 1.80m. His teammate Aaron Thomas was second also in 1.80m, with JC’s Kevin Campbell third with 1.70m.

Danielle Sloley of Immaculate won the girls’ javelin open with 31.32m. Chezigay Williams of Merl Grove High was second with 29.69m, just ahead of St Hugh’s Shere-Ann Brown with 29.60m in third.

In the blue ribbon 100m event, JC’s Michali Everett upset the applecart, capturing the boys’ Class One in 10.66 (-3.9 mps) ahead of Calabar’s Michael Stephens in 10.84. Wolmer’s Boys’ Xavier Nairne was third with 10.87.

KC’s favourite Terrique Stennett won the Class Two 100m in 10.83 (-3.1 mps) ahead of JC’s Deondre McIntosh with 10.94. KC’s Nkrumie Bouwahjgie finished third with 11.06. The impressive Christopher Scott of JC sped to 11.20 (-3.8 mps) for victory in the Class Three ahead of KC’s Amontae Wray with 11.59. Junior Harris of Camperdown High was third with 11.60. Mark-Anthony Miller of JC won the Class Four in 11.73 (-1.6 mps) ahead of Camperdown’s Jason Lewis with 11.77.

Hurdles star Britany Anderson of Camperdown High won the girls Class One 100m in 12.11 (-2.4 mps), ahead of Shantelle Riley of Immaculate High in 12.31 and Ashley White of Convent of Mercy Alpha third in 12.51.

Krystal Sloley of Campion College took the Class Two 100m in 12.06 (-1.9 mps). Immaculate’s Hughasia Fyffe was second in 12.07, with Wolmer’s Girls’ Destiny Smith third with 12.51. Class Three was won by Onanda Lowe of Immaculate in 12.24 (-2.8 mp) ahead of her teammate Gabrielle Lyn in 12.54.

It was also first and second for Immaculate in Class Four courtesy of Toni-Ann Bryan and Kennice Marriott. Bryan clocked 12.86 (-4.3) with Marriott second in 12.93.

Calabar star Christopher Taylor provided his school with their first victory on the final day, easily capturing the Class One 400m in 47.57 ahead of his teammate Shevoie Reid in 47.82. Demar Francis of Excelsior High was third with 48.14.

JC’s Deandre Watkins won the Class two 400m in an impressive 47.65 ahead of Jeremy Bembridge of Tarrant in 48.46. KC’s Michael Joseph was third in 48.86. KC’s Akeem Weir took the Class Three in 51.29 ahead of Penwood High’s Manwell Hay in 51.57. Calabar’s Shadane Smith was third with 51.88. Dushawn Grant of KC won the Class Four 400m in 52.07.

Calabar’s Cobe Graham won the Class One shot put with a throw of 17.99m ahead of his teammate Kai Chang with 16.89m. KC’s Nemoy Cockett was third with 15.91m.

KC’s standout Ralford Mulling broke his second record, this time in the Class Two shot put with a massive 18.84m. The previous record was 16.92m held by Zico Campbell since 2016. Calabar’s Kobe Lawrence threw 16.66m.

Jordan Turner of Calabar leapt 7.47m for the Class Two long jump record ahead of KC’s Jaheim Cox with 7.28m. Kc’s Alex Williams won the javelin open with 54.02m, ahead of Calabar’s Odayne Harris with 53.11m.

Wayne Pinnock once again soared passed the coveted eight-metre barrier for high school boys and touched down at 8.10m, but once again the tailwind of (2.7mps) denied him the record and the historic achievement. However, the record went to his teammate Shacquille Lowe, who did 7.75m (0.7 mps) and was second. Pinnock had earlier won the 110m hurdles in record fashion 13.46 (-2.2 mps).

Kingston College won the boys’ medley relay in record fashion, overturning a 15m deficit behind Calabar on the final leg and breaking the record with 3:27.52. JC was second with 3:29.11, with Calabar third in 3:29.13.

The champions Excelsior brought the house down and closed the curtains with record runs in the 4x400m relays, clocking 4:49.01. Dethroned champion Calabar with a cheeky run from Christopher Taylor on anchor also broke the record clocking 3:10.77.
