Accused baby thief fit to plead
ST ANDREW, Jamaica — It has been determined that the woman accused of stealing a day-old baby from the Victoria Jubilee Hospital in January is fit to plead.
The psychiatric evaluation report that was ordered last month revealed a short while ago that Peta-Gay Ffrench of a Harkers Hall, St Catherine address who was charged with child stealing last month has no psychosis and is not being treated.
When the matter was called up in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court today, the 27-year-old woman sat in the dock with her head held down as she sniffled and wiped her face.
French was taken into custody last month when she attempted to register the baby at the Registrar General Department in Twickenham Park in St Catherine.
She was later charged after DNA test revealed that she was not the mother.
Ffrench’s attorney, Stephen Shaw, when asked by parish Judge Sanchia Burrell if he wished to make a bail application, told the court that he would await all the statement before making an application.
