ST JAMES, Jamaica — The reputed leader of the Dean’s Lane gang, which operates in and around the parish of St James, was fatally shot during an alleged confrontation with the police yesterday.

The lawmen reported that two firearms were also seized following the incident.

Dead is 36-year-old Kayon Wellington, otherwise called ‘Scatta’, of Belmont, Anchovy in St James. Another man, who remains unidentified, was also killed during the shootout.

The constabulary’s Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) said Wellington was implicated in Sunday’s dramatic robbery on Jarrett Street in the parish, where 61-year-old, Canute Earle, security guard and 41-year-old Floyd Wilson were shot dead.

According to CCU, Wellington’s criminal activities date back to 2003 when he came under the police’s radar as a person of interest for crimes such as robberies, wounding with intent, shootings and murders in St James. 

He was implicated in the murders of Keniel Richards in 2013 in Belmont, the January 2018 murder of Kevin Lindo on McCarty Street, Montego Bay and the 2019 murders of Omar Watkins and Lloyd Johnson on Barnett Street, CCU reported.

Wellington’s co-conspirators in the robbery/murders on Jarrett Street are Odane Brown, otherwise called ‘Bummy Squeeze’ and a man known only as ‘Tickerous’.

Lawmen are appealing to both men to turn themselves in immediately and anyone knowing their whereabouts is being asked to contact the Montego Bay Criminal Investigation Branch at 876-953-6191, Crime Stop at 311, police 119 emergency number or the nearest police station
