Ardenne, Wolmer’s, Calabar capture ISSA All-Island TT honours

Ardenne, Wolmer’s, Calabar capture ISSA All-Island TT honours

ARDENNE High, Calabar High and Wolmer’s Girls’ captured the 2019 Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) All-Island Table Tennis Championships at Campion College Auditorium last Friday.

Ardenne defeated defending champions Titchfield High from Portland 3-2 in a thrilling boys’ Under-19 final to win the title. They had won the Urban High Schools Under-19 title by blanking Jonathan Grant High 3-0 in the final played the previous week.

The boys’ Under-19 championship final brought the season to an exciting final and was a very close battle between both teams, with the scores locked at 2-2 going into the fifth and final match to decide the winner.

Jonathan Newman of Ardenne won the first two sets over Titchfield’s Jahmarley Waysome but he trailed in the third set 4-9. Newman applied the pressure on Waysome to get the better of his opponent by gaining seven straight points to win 11-9 and give Ardenne a thrilling 3-2 victory.

The Ardenne girls followed their male counterparts by beating Titchfield High 3-1 in their Under-19 final to retain their All-Island Championships title.

They had also retained their Urban title by blanking St Andrew High 3-0 in the final played the previous week. Sandra Riettie is the coach of Ardenne’s boys’ and girls’ teams, while Samuel Lamont is the coach of both Titchfield’s teams.

Meanwhile, Wolmer’s Girls’ also captured the double when they defeated Westwood High from the parish of St Ann 3-0 in the Under-16 final. They had earlier won the Urban Girls’ Under-16 final by scoring an exciting 3-2 win over Alpha Academy. Wolmer’s are coached by Clive Grossett.

Calabar High captured the boys’ Under-16 All-Island Championships title by blanking Titchfield High 3-0 to add to their Urban triumph over Kingston College 3-0 in the final. Paul Curtis is the coach of Calabar.

In the Boys’ Under-19 finals Gordon Smith beat Tarique Thompson 3-1 with scores of 11-8, 12-10, 7-11, 11-8; Lemar Reid lost to Malique Rose 0-3 (7-11, 5-11, 0-11); Jordan Newman beat Jerome Dunbar 3-2 (8-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-6); Conroy Henry lost to Ainsley Dehaney 2-3 (3-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-5, 11-6); Jonathan Newman beat Jahmarley Waysome 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 11-9).

In the Girls’ Under-19 finals Dadrian Lewis beat Teandra Hill 3-1 (11-9, 10-12, 11-5, 11-5); Arianna Demetrius lost to Brittany Murray 0-3 (2-11, 4-11, 2-11); Kelice Sinclair beat Natalie Durrant 3-0 (11-9, 11-2, 11-4); Lewis beat Murray 3-1 (8-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7).

In the Boys’ Under-16 finals Demary Williams beat Antwone Pearce 3-2 (4-11, 8-11, 13-11, 11-8, 11-1); Antonio Prendergast beat Kamal Stampp 3-2 (11-13, 11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 11-7); Tyrese Nembhard beat Jeremy Golding 3-0 (11-5, 14-12, 11-3).

In the Girls’ Under-16 finals Tsenaye Lewis beat Joeline Saunders 3-1 (12-10, 11-9, 9-11, 11-4); Gianna Lewis beat Taskekia Spence 3-0 (11-3, 11-5, 11-3); Liana Campbell beat Jianna Farquharson 3-0 (11-8, 11-3, 11-5).

Meanwhile, in the Rural High Schools finals played prior to the All-Island Championships finals, Titchfield High from the parish of Portland dominated the competition by winning three titles.

Titchfield defeated St Mary High from St Mary 4-1 to capture the boys’ Under-19 final, and beat York Castle High from St Ann 3-1 to win the girls’ Under-19 final.

The boys’ Under-16 final was won by Titchfield, who defeated St James High from St James 4-1, while Westwood from St Ann defeated Titchfield 3-0 to capture the girls’ Under-16 All-Island Championships title.
