1. Theft of 5 vehicles from patrons at Buju concert prompts police warning

The theft of five motor vehicles belonging to patrons who attended Buju Banton’s Long Walk to Freedom concert at the National Stadium on Saturday, has prompted an appeal from the police for motorists to always use designated parking areas when attending events.

2. 31-y-o woman murdered in Kingston

Mary-Ann Dorie, a bearer of Tivoli Gardens, was shot dead by unknown assailants on Collie Smith Drive in Kingston on Saturday night. She was in a motor car awaiting a friend, the police said.

3. BITU concerned about ‘precarious’ contracts for hotel workers

The Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) todaywelcomed the announcement by Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett that a bill promulgating a pension scheme for workers in the tourism sector should be ready by April, but said it is concerned about short term contracts being offered to some hotel employees.

4. Jamaica’s economic growth projected at nearly 2% for 2018

The Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) says the medium-term outlook for Jamaica “is positive” with 1.7 per cent growth projected for the financial year 2018-19.

6. Shaw commits to development of dairy industry

The Government is assuring dairy farmers that it is committed to the growth and development of the industry, and wants to see milk production restored to the high levels experienced in the mid-1980s to early 1990s.

8. Road fatalities up by 37% so far this year 

The Road Safety Unit is reporting a 37 per cent increase in road fatalities and 29% increase in fatal crashes in Jamaica since the start of the year when compared to the corresponding last year.  

9. NEPA going after plastic bag users

Almost three months after the Government implemented the ban on specific categories of single-use plastic bags, some people are still using the outlawed items, but the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) is warning that the time for allowances has expired.

More than 1,000 people were feared dead in Mozambique four days after a cyclone slammed into the country, submerging entire villages and leaving bodies floating in the floodwaters, the nation’s president said.
