Road fatalities up by 37% so far this year
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Road Safety Unit is reporting a 37 per cent increase in road fatalities and 29% increase in fatal crashes in Jamaica since the start of the year when compared to the corresponding last year.
According to the latest statistics released this morning, 90 people have died in 81 road crashes since the start of the year. This represents a 29-per cent increase over the 70 people who died in 59 crashes during the similar period last year.
Motorcyclists accounted for 29 per cent of those killed so far this year, pedestrians 23 per cent and passengers 21 per cent.
Drivers and passengers of private motor vehicle each accounted for 17 per cent.
The unit also noted that more males than females were dying in road crashes, as 92 per cent of the victims were male.
