General secretary of Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Dalton Wint says efforts will be made to reach out to Reggae Girlz Head Coach Hue Menzies, as they seek to settle issues surrounding the team’s contractual negotiations.

Wint’s response came a day after Menzies told this newspaper that he and his team took the decision to put the selection and other plans for their historic bow at the Fifa Women’s World Cup on hold, pending a suitable outcome regarding contracts for both the coaching staff, and more importantly, players.

The head coach pointed out that his grouse was with what he described as “outdated contracts” sent to several players in the Reggae Girlz pool, after he and his assistant Lorne Donaldson declined to sign their contracts “until the players were taken care of”.

However, when asked if the coach could be pointing to a specific clause in the said contract, Wint was reluctant to go into detail.

“I can’t speculate as to what the coach sees as an outdated contract, what I can tell you is that this is the same contract that we have used for the men and they have been satisfied with this contract — apart from the remuneration — because, as you are aware, the women’s programme has just started seeing any sort of support from corporate Jamaica.

“I haven’t spoken to the coach and I haven’t heard anything from any lawyer or agent, but I will be speaking to the coach later on today (yesterday) to have a discussion to hear what he has in mind,” Wint told the Jamaica Observer.

Like Menzies and his team, Wint pointed out that he, too, is optimistic of a brisk resolve, as the Reggae Girlz coach hinted at the possibility of showing some form of protest ahead of the South Africa friendly on April 7.

“The girls received individual contracts, it’s not a contract that is a pool. They received individual contracts and the offer has been made. Their contracts depend on their appearances and how long they stay in the programme, and some girls, as you know, cannot get any sort of remuneration, so we take that into account and see how best we can deal with that situation,” Wint explained.

“But it (contract dispute) has to be resolved one way or another. The truth of the matter is, these girls have qualified for the World Cup and everybody is expecting the Jamaican team to be in South Africa and in France for the World Cup. So the JFF doesn’t have a choice but to prepare for that,” he added.

And should both parties fail to come to an agreement prior to the women’s global showpiece, Wint declared that the show will go on nonetheless.

“Jamaica is made up of three million people and out of that population we must find 23 willing individuals to participate in the World Cup, because we have some ladies who can prepare themselves.

“But the truth of the matter is not everybody who qualified the team will be heading to France, but that is the coach’s call. What the JFF knows is that they will be sending a team to France,” Wint ended.

The 53rd-ranked Reggae Girlz have been drawn in Group C, alongside Australia, Brazil and Italy for the June 7 to July 7 tournament.
