WHITEHOUSE, Westmoreland — Junior Schools’ Challenge Quiz finalist, Broughton Primary School has yet another achievement under its belt.

This, after beating Paradise Primary in a well-contested match to walk away as champions of the Westmoreland Parish Library History Challenge Quiz Competition recently.

In pursuit of the title, Broughton challenged five other Westmoreland-based schools, including Junior School’s Challenge Quiz Champions, Mount Airy All-Age and Frome Prep, with the latter placing third in the competition.

The History Challenge Quiz Competition is a signature event for the Westmoreland Parish Library, which caters to primary school students aged 10 to 12. The competition first began in 2012 and has been held every year since then.

For Nordia Miller-Gray, senior librarian at the Westmoreland Parish Library, initiatives like the History Challenge Quiz Competition are important to the library’s mission of empowering communities and transforming lives.

“This competition provides a learning opportunity for everyone: the teachers, attending sponsors and well-wishers and my library staff, but most importantly for the students,” she stressed.

Miller-Gray also noted that this year’s competition was very well supported and had nothing but praises for her sponsors.

Among the top sponsors for this year’s competition was Sandals South Coast, which has sponsored various initiatives at the Westmoreland Parish Library, as well as the Whitehouse Branch Library.

Sandals South Coast Public Relations Manager Rochelle Forbes was on hand at the finals of the competition to present prizes to all participants. The resort also sponsored the winning trophy for the champion school.

“Through our community efforts, we seek opportunities to celebrate and encourage the pursuit of knowledge among our youth and the Westmoreland Parish Library History Challenge Quiz Competition provides such an opportunity,” said Forbes.

She further noted that she was also impressed with the competition’s focus on current affairs.

Miller-Gray noted that she is particularly appreciative of the continued support that the Westmoreland Parish Library receives from Sandals South Coast.

Coach for the champion team, Marva David-Clarke, lauded the organisers of the competition.

She noted that “competitions like these are important for the children as it allows them to learn much more about the history of Jamaica.”
