Hyde l High’s Lamara Distin won double gold medals on yesterday’s fourth day of the 109th ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships at the National Stadium, setting a new Class One high jump record after winning the triple jump Open, a few hours earlier.

Distin soared 1.87m to break the 1.86m set in 2012 by Chanice Porter but failed at 1.89m going after the National Junior Record, as she retained the title she won last year while representing Vere Technical.

A few hours before, Distin — who also attended Rusea’s High and who was fourth last year — won the triple jump on count back with a better card than her teammate Rhianna Phipps, who had the same mark of 13.37m.

It was the second field event record set yesterday as Cedricka Williams of Holmwood Technical established a new championships record in the Class Two discus throw event.

Distin, who represented Jamaica at the IAAF World Under-20 Championships in Finland last year, making it past the first round, beat Edwin Allen’s Janique Burgher with 1.82m, as Phipps ended third with 1.76m.

In the triple jump, Distin’s winning mark came on the final effort as she had a second-best mark of 13.09m as well as 12.97m in the fourth round, while Phipps’ best jump came in the first round and her next-best mark was 12.53m.

Edwin Allen’s Ackelia Smith, who won the silver last year, took the bronze with 13.15m.

Cedricka Williams of Holmwood Technical established a new championships record after throwing 42.47m to retain her Class Two discus throw title on yesterday’s penultimate day.

After just missing the mark last year with 41.21m, Williams got the disc out to 42.47m yesterday, surpassing the 42.28m set almost exactly seven years ago by former Edwin Allen thrower Paul-Ann Gayle on March 30, 2012.

Williams struggled early, starting with two fouls, and was on the verge of fouling out of the competition before a 36.09m effort in the third round guaranteed her three more throws and a shot at defending her title.

The record came in the fourth round and after another foul she threw 41.96m, which would still be enough to beat Edwin Allen’s Damali Williams who took the silver medal with 40.43m, while Clarendon College’s Shanara Richards took the bronze with 39.13m.

Clarendon College’s Roxene Simpson, who finished 18th last year, won the Class Two gold medal with 41.38m ahead of St Jago High’s Kayla Davis, who was fourth last year, with Edwin Allen’s Kadine Brown, who was 10th last year, taking the bronze.

Davis, who led after the first round with 39.84m, won the silver, while Brown threw 39.45m in the final round to secure the bronze.

In the first final of the day, St Catherine High’s Ashley Duff won the gold medal with a throw of 40.79m, more than two metres longer than the 38.47m by Hydel High’s Thaila Wilson, with St Jago High’s Latavia Galloway third with 37.22m.

Petersfield High’s Judeen Aird, bronze medallist last year and who was the favourite to win the event, finished sixth with 35.99m.

Immaculate Conception High took gold and bronze in the Class Four high jump as Misha-jade Samuels won with 1.64m, ahead of Vere Technical’s Chloe Palmer with 16.1m, the same as Lori Choy in third place.

Meanwhile, Hydel High’s Sashanti Hinds had the best jump in the Class Three long jump preliminaries yesterday, cutting the sand at 5.70m (0.9m/s), followed by Immaculate Conception’s Onanda Lowe with 5.62m and Kay-lagay Clarke with 5.52m, while St Andrew Technical’s Tamieka McKoy, Shinelle Thomas of Manchester High and Hydel High’s Alliah Baker also qualified for the final set for today.
