School choirs on show today
Michael Roofe, chairman of the management committee of Calabar High, said this evening’s concert — Evening of Musical Excellence — will showcase the school’s talent outside the track and field arena.
“Musical excellence is a part of our musical culture, we are more than a track and field school. It started in 2009 and since then we have had various committees to ensure it is a success,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Held under the patronage of alum Dr Vincent Lawrence and his wife, the event is slated to take place at the school’s 61 Red Hills Road chapel in St Andrew. Starting time is 5:00 pm.
Proceeds are geared towards Calabar High’s musical development programme.
Roofe said patrons should expect exceptional sounds from this year’s performers, including Calabar’s arch-rivals, Kingston College.
“It will be an evening of musical excellence. We will have folk music, Michael Jackson impersonations, traditional songs by the Kingston College and Calabar choirs, and a tribute to Jimmy Cliff,” he said.
Other acts include Jennifer Williams and The Queen’s School choir.
Roofe said this year’s staging is merely a continuation of last year.
“This year is just a continuation of last year and every other year, with a few changes — but it is the same quality,” he explained.
