Bacchanal goes dancehall
The indigenous sounds of Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica will share the spotlight at tonight’s Bacchanal and Dancehall scheduled for Mas Camp in St Andrew.
Now in its third staging, the event is host by veteran soca camp Bacchanal Jamaica.
“We decided to incorporate dancehall because it is a good way to make our product more uniquely Jamaican. It has gone over really well with the Jamaican population,” Michael Ammar Jr, a director of Bacchanal Jamaica, told the Jamaica Observer.
Ammar Jr said he has been receiving massive support for this event.
“There has been lots of buzz. We are optimistic about a good turnout, and we’re going all out. Mas Camp won’t look like Mas Camp because of the provisions that are being made for a good experience,” he further told the Jamaica Observer’s weekly Splash.
The director said Bacchanal is still a true soca band, regardless of including dancehall, and that is what separates it from its competition.
“Bacchanal is at its core a soca band. So even if dancehall is included, it’s probably going to be about 60/40; being predominantly soca. Not to discredit dancehall, but during carnival season it is mostly about soca and that is what we deliver. We are unapologetic about that,” he said.
Tonight’s event will feature deejays Tyler, Chromatic and Bishop Escobar alongside Trinidadian Lord Hype.
