Well done!
Jamaica’s fast-rising sprint star Briana Williams became only the sixth athlete to win back-to-back Austin Sealy Award honours at the Carifta track and field championships, after she was named the winner on Monday, following the end of the 48th staging at Truman Bodden Sports Complex in Grand Cayman.
Williams, who won the Under-20 sprint double of 100m in 11.25 seconds (0.3m/s) and the 200m in 22.89 (0.9m/s) before leading the Under-20 4x100m relay team to gold, etched her name in the history of the regional championships joining a list of some of the most outstanding athletes from the region in the last half-century.
The 17-year-old, who won the award last year after a similar treble in the Under-17 age group, joins Bahamian javelin thrower Lavere Even, who won in 1983/84; Cayman horizontal jumper Kareem Street-Thompson in 1989/90; Trinidadian sprinter Darrell Brown in 1999/2000; Jamaican sprint star Usain Bolt in 2003/04 and Bahamian sprinter Anthonique Strachan in 2011/2012.
Jamaica ended the three-day championships on a high with a dominating display on Monday’s final day topping the medals table with 85, one short of tying the record for most-ever set two years ago in Curacao.
Jamaicans won 28 medals on Monday after sweeping all the gold medals on offer in both the sprint and 4x400m relays and the sprint hurdles while capturing both boys’ triple jump gold medals, as well.
Jamaica won 36 gold medals, 33 silver and 16 bronze as The Bahamas finished second with 26 medals (nine gold, seven silver and 10 bronze),
Trinidad and Tobago were third with 24 medals (5-7-12) followed by Guyana with 10 medals (4-2-4), Barbados with 11 (3-4-4) and Bermuda on six (3-1-2).

The Under-17 boys’ foursome of Tariq Dacres, Tahj Hamm, Adrian Nethersole and Jayden Brown clocked 3:16.56 minutes, well ahead of Trinidad in 3:18.71 minutes and St Kitts/Nevis won their only medal, the bronze in 3:25.84 minutes.
The team of Johnelle Thomas, Shaquena Foote, Annakay Allen and Nickisha Pryce combined to run 3:36.26 minutes to win the Under-20 girls’ 4x400m relay, helping Foote win her third gold of the weekend.
The Under-20 boys’ 4x400m team ended the championships on a high when Evaldo Whitehorne, 800m winner Kemar Farquharson, Antonio Watson and Anthony Cox won in 3:07.82 minutes, ahead of Barbados in 3:08.98 minutes and The Bahamas in 3:14.54 minutes.
Earlier, Kevroy Venson successfully defended his 5,000m Open, running 15 minutes 21.30 seconds, sprinting away from The Bahamas’ Gabriel Curtis, who took the silver medal with 15:23.15 minutes, with Jamaica’s Fabian Campbell third in 16:00.03 minutes.
