Best New Product 2019 Nominee: Scotch Boyz Pepper Sauce

Counting Down To The 21st Staging Of The Jamaica Observer Table Talk Food Awards, Thursday, May 30, 2019

We made these products because… the seed for our Scotch Boyz products was planted in Westmoreland, Jamaica from a friendship between three childhood friends whose families vied each year for the best jerk sauce for the barbecue.

The boyz grew up, moved to the capital city of Kingston and continued their friendship and tradition of grilling and experimenting with jerk sauce blends. All three friends were at heart country boys who loved nothing more than a good Jamaican jerk and any excuse for a get-together.

The boyz, now men with more than grill skills (one an entrepreneur, one armed with a law degree and the other a business consultant) soon had a sauce crafted around a grandfather’s Portland recipe and the must-have ingredient of each. This sauce had to be made available to all. The Boyz incorporated a company, revamped a red and black ink logo and brought to market a blend of authentic and contemporary tastes. Scotch Boyz was born.

Our major challenge is… Scotch Boyz’s unique flavour is attributable to the quality of our ingredients as we only use the highest quality peppers. There are times when Scotch Boyz has struggled with consistency of supply for our raw materials as there is no single farmer that can meet our demand. Scotch Boyz buys from over 20 small farmers islandwide to meet the production demand.

The products became available to the public in… early 2018 and hit the shelves late last year.

The products are available at… Hi-Lo, Loshusan, Fontana and are used in several boutique hotels islandwide such as Half-Moon, Travellers and Boardwalk Village.

The response to the products has been… exceptional. Once consumers try our sauce they are hooked.

Our first breakthrough came… when Hi-Lo decided to carry the entire line of Scotch Boyz islandwide in all 13 of their stores. This was a watershed moment for us as a new company. Hi-Lo supported us as new entrants to the market because they loved the Scotch Boyz story, supported Jamaican entrepreneurship and of course our sauce.

Jamaicans should support our product because… Scotch Boyz Jamaica is the bottling of a tradition as old as Jamaica itself, that of jerk. And no one loves food more than us Jamaicans! But how do you improve on something so timeless that has been perfected over centuries? Simple answer: you don’t, but you’ve never tried our flavour of jerk! The genesis of the Scotch Boyz recipe dates back more than 50 years but we use only 100% Jamaican-sourced ingredients that are grown to the highest standards and we’ve kept it simple with blended peppers, and not much else. Scotch Boyz is 100% owned and operated by young Jamaicans who are bringing their passion for food and business to life in the new brand.

Our branding proudly bears the Jamaican flag but our ethos and branding apply to the “New Jamaica”, a prosperous island paradise that’s serious about business with a product that’s made and delivered to the highest standards. We are a brand that looks “real rich” but we are delivered at a price point that all can enjoy.
