Jamaican colleges denied victories at Penn Relays

Jamaica’s college teams were denied any victories at last weekend’s 125th Penn Relays Carnival, held in mostly chilly and wet conditions at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.

The best any of the relay teams did from the five colleges that participated were second place in three events — the College Men’s 4x100m and both 4x200m Invitational finals.

A number of US-based Jamaicans represented their colleges and universities, with former Excelsior High thrower Shanice Love retaining her college women’s discus throw title with 58.25m and Venique Harris of the University of Albany, who previously attended Ardenne High and The University of the West Indies, placing third with 54.39m.

Former Edwin Allen representative Shannon Kalawan, now of St Augustine’s in North Carolina, won the college women’s 400m hurdles in the 57.37 seconds.

UWI-Mona were second in the College Men’s 4x100m on Saturday, running 40.64 seconds with the team of Emmanuel Archibald, Mazhino Barnett, Lester Ryan and Xandre Blake and beaten by Virginia State who ran 40.59 seconds.

The University of Technology placed second in the Championship of America 4x200m invitational. The men’s team of Malik James-King, Andy Williams, Devaughn Baker and Kemar Green clocked one minute 24.14 seconds behind the University of Houston’s 1:22.04 minutes, while Mico University placed fourth in 1:24.60 minutes.

The women’s team was also runner-up behind the University of South Carolina, the team of Shockoria Wallace, Junelle Bromfield, Derriann Hill and Kasheika Cameron clocking 1:33.86 minutes.

G C Foster placed fifth in the College Women 4x100m Championship of America invitational in 45.31 seconds with the team of Kimone Shaw, Tissanna Hickling, Shianne Salmon and Ashley Williams, while their men’s team finished fourth in their College Men’s 4x400m Championship of America Invitational in 3:06.63 minutes with the team of Demar Murray, Colby Jennings, Kemarid Eldemire and Akani Slater.

UTech led in the college men’s shuttle hurdles championships for the first three legs but ended up third in 58.09 seconds.

G C Foster placed fourth in the College Men’s Sprint Medley Championships in 3:22.22 minutes with Okeem White, Ordaine McPherson, Akani Slater and Daniel Glayne.

In the individual events, the UWI Mona pair of Carlington Moulton and Emmanuel Archibald finished second in the high jump and long jump events last Friday.

Moulton cleared 2.08m to place second in the college men’s high jump, which was won by University of Indiana’s Jyles Etienne who cleared 2.12m.

Archibald had a best jump of 7.57 (0.5m/s) in the college men’s long jump championships, behind South Carolina’s Yann Randrianasolo’s 7.65m (1.4m/s).

Christopher Brown of UWI Mona was sixth in the college men’s shot put championships with 17.81m, just ahead of former Petersfield High thrower Sanjae Lawrence, now of FSU, who was eighth with 17.11m.

Latifa Smith of UTech was 11th in the college women shot put championships in 14.47m, where former Edwin Allen schoolgirl Janell Fullerton was second competing for Clemson with 16.26m.

UTech’s Alec-Verne Longmore finished 12th in the college men’s discus throw with a best mark of 47.15m, and was 31st in shot put with a best of 15.17m.

Malik James-King of UTech was 14th in the College Men’s 400m hurdles championships in 53.16 seconds.
