ROJORN Di Pilot , a promising three-year-old colt owned by Roam from the barn of champion trainer Wayne DaCosta, returned from a near five-month hiatus with an encouraging performance that suggests, for the moment, that he may be better served over sprint distances after a fine display over five furlongs (1000m) round at Caymanas Park on Saturday, May 18, 2019.

Running among more experienced campaigners in the three-year-old and upward – imported three-year-old maidens and three-year-old (NW2) lifetime, Rojorn Di Pilot ( Liquidity – I’m Magic by Alisios) outran rivals by 2 ¾ lengths to give his trainer a modicum of satisfaction.

“We always thought he was pretty talented,” DaCosta said and continued, “We tried him going long at the end of last year in the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes over 1,600 metres (one mile) and his performance showed that he does not stay.

“He came out of the race with some sore shins, so we decided to give him a rest and brought him back two months later to the track and this is where he is now at. For the time being, I think he is a good sprinter. I do not think that he will get much longer than six furlongs (1,200 metres).

“He probably can develop into being a good sprinter. You never can tell because there is nothing really great out there this year to sprint, so we’ll just wait and see,” DaCosta added.

Universal Boss, the 3-2 second favourite trained by leading trainer Anthony Nunes defeated Rojorn Di Pilot, the even money favourite, on debut, but finished second on this occasion, in the field of seven with Splendid Vision, a 49-1 bet finishing third.

The final time was a good 1:00.1 with splits of 22.3 and 46.1.
