Chairman and meet director of the Racers Adidas Grand Prix, Glen Mills is super excited about the event that will serve as an important preparation for Jamaica’s Senior Championship and by extension the IAAF World Championship set for September.

The fourth staging of the Racers Adidas Grand Prix is set for Saturday, June 8, and the Senior Championship is slated for June 20-23 inside the National Stadium.

”It’s important for all the athletes who are preparing for the trials to get a run in and show where they are and build their confidence,” Mills told the Jamaica Observer, as he took time out from overseeing his Racers Track Club training session at the Usain Bolt track at the University of the West Indies (UWI).

“I am hoping that everybody will be at their best and give us some quality competition. I see where the amazing Shelly-Ann (Fraser-Pryce) ran 10.97 in an All Comers Meet, and I saw her and I was extremely impressed because I think she could have gone much faster from what I saw and I really admired the way she has worked her way back to that level,” Mills pointed out.

“She has always done well at Racers and if that is an indication of what she is going to do next week, then we are in for a treat,” he added.

Mills, who coached Usain Bolt to multiple Olympic and World Championship titles, said there are some outstanding races worth going miles to see that will make the Grand Prix another “spectacle”.

“There are some good races, very competitive. The men’s 100 is usually a highlight of the meet and with Yohan Blake running sub-10, I think it will provide a good spectacle. There will be good competition from Asafa (Powell), who has worked his way back to shape. There is Zharnel Hughes who won last year and there is Kendal Williams from America(and) he has run 10.03 this year. So it’s going to be very competitive,” said Mills.

“The women’s 400m with Miller-Uibo and the World champion Phyllis Francis should be a battle royal for supremacy. Both have victories over each other, and I am excited about the long jump men and the discus men. Jamaica is strongly represented there.

“We have Tajay Gayle, who won a Diamond League — the first time a Jamaican was winning that — beating the world. We have the American Jarron Lawson, who finished fourth in the Olympic. In fact, we have about eight or nine competitors who have gone over eight metres,” Mills noted.

He added: “There is the national champion Ramone Bailey and young Wayne Pinnock of KC, takes his berth at international senior competition. He has had a splendid season and everybody will be excited to see how well he does in company like this. We have two Cubans who are over eight metres, so I think it will be a nail biting competition.”

Mills also mentioned the women’s 100m hurdles with American world record holder Kendra Harrison taking on her countrywoman Queen Harrison and Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds-Tapper and young Yanique Thompson.

“The men’s 400m with (Fred) Kerley, (Machel) Cedenio, and (Nathan) Allen who hasn’t shown his best of late, plus (Javon) Francis who I think is a little short of races, and a race like this in front of his home crowd is just what the doctor ordered. Then there is Demish Gaye who has been showing good form at the All Comers meets,” said Mills.

“There is not a dull moment and as usual we will provide the best organised spectacle, so spectators are in for a treat because nothing pulsating like good competition,” he ended.
