Shaw double not enough as Girlz go down 2-3 to Scotland
GLASGOW, Scotland — A brace by prolific striker Khadija Shaw was not enough to stop Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz going down 2-3 to Scotland despite a gutsy display in a friendly contest at Hampden Park here yesterday.
Shaw sent Jamaica in front in the 15th minute and added another in the 49th, but Scotland through goals from Erin Cuthbert (30th), Caroline Weir (35th) and Sophie Howard (56th), ensured it was the perfect send-off on their part.
It may have been a farewell party for Scotland, but the Jamaicans were also made to feel at home by their pocket-sized support in the mix of approximately 18,555 in attendance.
Both teams, who will be making their debut appearance at the Fifa Women’s World Cup in France, will now turn their focus on fine-tuning ahead of the June 7-July 7 tournament.
In yesterday’s match-up, both teams applied a high-press tactic, but Scotland at the start were more comfortable in possession and moving the ball around with a few steady build ups that forced the Jamaicans into an early defensive posture.
Jamaica showed some signs of early nerves as they struggled a bit to get out of their quarters due to unforced errors as there was a disconnect between defenders and midfielders.
When they did settle, the intent was clear as Shaw fired a warning shot from distance to keep the Scottish goalkeeper Lee Alexander on her toes.
The very next build up for Jamaica proved fruitful as Chantelle Swaby in the midfield applied pressure to pick the defenders pocket before laying off a pass for Shaw who fired a stinging left-footed effort past Alexander.
Although leading the contest, Jamaica were again forced on the back foot as Scotland went on the probe for the equaliser, which resulted in the Girlz scrambling to clear their lines on a few occasions.
Sydney Schneider was well positioned to push one wide, denying Weir who found space to get a shot off from some way out in the 22nd minute.
Seven minutes later, a cheeky pass from Jane Ross to Kim Little gutted Jamaica’s defence, but the advancing Schneider thwarted the danger.
However, the Jamaican custodian had no answer to 20-year-old Chelsea striker Erin Cuthbert’s wicked strike from the half-hour mark.
And Scotland stuck their nose in front a minute later when Weir converted a well-taken free kick from the edge of the 18-yard box.
Jamaica had one last bite at an equaliser in the 45th, but Cheyna Matthews’ pass across the face of goal was left hanging with no one arriving and the score remained 2-1 at the break.
The Jamaicans started out more purposeful on the resumption and were back on level terms four minutes in through Shaw, who broke and expertly slotted past the advancing Alexander.
But that was all the good fortunes Jamaica would have as Scotland again placed themselves in front through substitute Howard who was allowed time and space to set to head home at the far post from a weighted corner from Lisa Evans.
To make matters worse, Jamaica lost Shaw to an ankle injury and her replacement Kayla McCoy was also forced off with a knee injury.
