Burrowes is 2019 Alliance National Amateur Golf Champion

THE curtains came down on an exciting finish to the Alliance National Amateur Golf Championships on Sunday at Caymanas Golf & Country Club.

National Representative Justin Borrowes swept to victory after ending the Championships tied in first place with fellow Hoerman Cup team member William Knibbs. Burrowes shot 73, 74, 65, and 71 and Knibbs’ scorecards reflected 76, 69, 71, and 67.

Both players completed the four-day event with an identical score of 283, five below par. Knibbs entered the final round with a head start of four shots, but Burrowes doubled down and shot 67 on Sunday to level the playing field.

After playing hole number one the first time, Burrowes and Knibbs finished with par. On their second attempt, Burrowes’ par netted him the coveted crystal trophy and the title of National Amateur Champion for 2019. Knibbs took a bogey, which relegated him to second place.

Romaine Evans finished third with 292, while Owen Samuda was fourth with 293.

Paul Leyow emerged victorious in the Men 7-12 category with a total of 321 strokes. Justin Murray was second with 324 and Richard White finished third on 348. Kristian Chin snagged the top spot with 341 strokes in the Men 13+ group.

George Hugh captured the Super Senior title with rounds of 77, 79, and 79 for a total of 235. Hugh finished one stroke ahead of Robert Chin (236). Michael Boyd followed with 240, in front of Jeffrey Dujon (241).

In the 13+ group of Super Seniors, Howard McKenzie emerged triumphant on 269. Gordon Hutchinson ended the event in second position (278) and George Wright was third with 303.

Veteran National Representative Jodi Munn-Barrow started the Championship one shot over par and stayed in the seventies all four days. Munn-Barrow took the Ladies 0-12 title with scores of 73, 77, 76, and 78. Kei Harris played steady golf (77, 77, 79, 77) to finish in second place.

At the prize giving on Sunday, JGA President and event sponsor Peter Chin congratulated the winners and thanked Caymanas for presenting the course in tournament-ready condition. Vice-President Dr Mark Newnham noted that the display of skill from the players in the 0-6 category augurs well for their performance at the annual Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships.

In the two-day Alliance 36, Dave Cameron was first with 173. Oliver McIntosh won the men 13+ category with 186. Winston Watson took the Super Senior title with 165. With a score of 179, Richard Josephs captured the 13+ Super Senior category. Emily Mayne topped the ladies 0-12 division with 173, while Runaway Bay-based Novlette Maestrini took the 13+ grouping with 199. Tristan Brown had the best one-day score of 79.

The juniors came out to test their skills against the course and in the girls’ 11-13, Mattea Issa won with 183 over Winni Lau (187). In the boys’ 11-13, Aman Dhiman was first with 178, over Ryan Lue on 205. Matthew Grant won the boys’ 14-15 tournament with 181. Radino Lobban had the best one-day score (82).

The tournament was sponsored for the third consecutive year by Alliance Investment Management Limited.
