Sir Ian Links might be in the Boom Jamaica Derby — owner
FOLLOWING Sir Ian Links’ powerful win in a maiden condition race on Saturday, June 8 at Caymanas Park, owner Ian Lodge says he might now consider racing his the three-year-old dark bay gelding in the upcoming Boom Jamaica Derby scheduled for June 29 over 12 furlongs (2,400m).
Racing for the 13th time, Sir Ian Links ( Natural Selection – Cliffy’s Choice) after some pretty good efforts, finally found his way in front at the winning post with a 1 ¼ length win in a native-bred three-year-olds event over 8 ½ furlongs (1,700m) in a reasonable time of 1:48.1 with splits of 24.3, 48.3, 1:13.2 and 1:40.0.
“We corked his ears today (Saturday). We realised that whenever, he is coming up the straight in his races, he is running like he is afraid and so we thought that maybe the noise from the crowd was bothering him and so we corked his ears and it worked out for us.
“The time was not bad. I mean 1:48.1 is still a good time and I am going to talk with the trainer and find out if we can go any further. I am very pleased with the performance as I think that it was a pretty good one and I think that I want to give him a shot on the bigger scene and see what he can do in the Jamaica Derby. It is horse racing and anything can happen,” Lodge told The Supreme Racing Guide.
After a couple of strides leaving the starting gates for the horses to settle, it was Sea Cruise (Tevin Foster) that showed on the headline ahead of San Siro (Reyan Lewis) and Candlelight (Natalie Berger).
Candlelight then took over proceedings at the 5-furlong (1,000m) marker over Sea Cruise and company with Sir Ian Links, under Omar Walker, still with the backmarkers.
However, in a flash, Sir Ian Links cruised down into second position at the half-mile (800m) as Sea Cruise rallied for the lead and the two came into the lane, all set to do battle.
Sir Ian Links, with a change of lead, kicked clear of Sea Cruise and carried the momentum to the wire for a well-earned win.
San Siro was game in second place with Awesome Miracle (Bebeto Harvey) finishing in third place and Salah (Jemar Jackson) in fourth.
