Fedrick Dacres sets new national record in men’s discus
RABAT, Morocco — Jamaica’s Fedrick Dacres put himself in select company on Sunday after he smashed his one-year-old National Record in the discus throw with a monster 70.78m throw to win the event at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Rabat, Morocco.
The throw, which was initially ruled a foul but was overruled on an appeal by the athlete, broke the 69.67m he set in June last year and saw him shoot up 10 spots on the all time list to number 19.
The throw also took over as the World Lead, moving the Jamaican from second past Sweden’s Daniel Stahl who was second yesterday and broke a number of records to include: the Jamaican National Record, Diamond League record, Commonwealth record, meet record and the first discus throw over 70.00m on African soil.
The Commonwealth Games champion led the competition after the first two rounds and before the successful appeal, had finished second behind Stahl’s 69.94m, which would have also been a meet record.
