21 still remain in Jamaica Derby
THE racing office of the promoting company Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited has issued another update on the potential starters for this year’s running of the 12-furlong (2,400 metres) Jamaica Derby, on Saturday, June 29, 2019.
The Jamaica Derby is the longest race on the local racing calendar and is again sponsored by the Wisynco Group using its brand product, Boom energy drink. The Derby carries a total purse of $8 million.
Again, leading trainer Anthony Nunes heads the pack with seven possible starters, led by 2000 Guineas and Governor’s Cup winner Supreme Soul and 1000 Guineas winner, the talented filly I Am Di One. Nunes’ other runners are Earn Your Stripes, Tricky One, Princess Ava, Envisaged, and Big Bang.
Trainer Gary Subratie is next in the pecking order of possible Derby starters with three. Subratie’s best shot is probably, Sentient, who finished behind Supreme Soul in both the 2000 and the Governor’s Cup. The other Subratie inmates are Casual Drink and Ali.
For the final list on Nomination Day, which is Tuesday, June 25, horses with the most lifetime earnings are given preference, with all horses duly nominated subjected to veterinary checks the day after nominations are completed.
Colts and geldings are mandated to carry 126 lb (57.0 kgs) and fillies 121 lb (55.0 kgs).
No apprentice claims are allowed in the Derby, which is run for the Sir John Mordecai Trophy.
