Schoolgirl league’s top-scorer Salmon harbours Reggae Girlz dream
CHISTIANA Salmon and her Excelsior High School were the toast at the presentation ceremony of the ISSA/Locker Room Sports/TIP Friendly sponsored football competition for high school girls at the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) offices last Friday.
Excelsior girls, who retained their title, captured nine awards with the other two going to Holmwood Technical and Meadowbrook high schools.
In the individual awards category, 16-year-old Christina Salmon, a Grade 10 student from Excelsior walked away with the three awards. She captured Top Goal-scorer award with 59 goals, Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the entire season and MVP in the final against Denham Town.
“It is a great feeling that I got these three top trophies, and I am feeling very great to achieve this feat,” said Salmon.
She said this is the second year she was playing for Excelsior and her aim this year was to becoming the leading goal-scorer in the competition.
According to Salmon, who represented Jamaica in the CONCACAF Under-17 competition, she wants to pursue academics and to one day also represent the Jamaica senior women’s football team.
The other awards won by Excelsior went to Tarania Clarke for Best Defender; Davia Richards for Most Promising Junior Player and Second Highest Goal-scorer with 53 goals; and Tiana Schroeter, Best Goalkeeper.
Excelsior’s Xavier Gilbert was named Coach of the Year.
Meadowbrook High, meanwhile, was named the Most Improved School in the urban area competition, while Holmwod Technical was awarded the overall Most Improved School.
The top three schools – champions Excelsior, runners-up Denham Town and third-placed Holmwood Technical – were presented with their trophies and medals.
Meanwhile, incoming ISSA president Keith Wellington said the competition was successful, and went on to congratulate the champions and the participating schools.
“You all are given the opportunity to showcase your talents, and ISSA has set the foundation so you can go on to the bigger stage where you can represent your country,” he said.
