Another of the alleged Clarendon death squad trials has ended in acquittals. What is left is basically one that never started off as a police shooting and the other the conviction of a narcissist who honestly needs to mount an insanity defence as part of his appeal, as he actually confessed to this still-unsubstantiated farce and fairy tale.

I think it is time to reflect on what we have allowed to be done so as to further the careers of a few human rights activists and to justify the INDECOM budget. It is clear that the death squad trials have failed and what we are left with is a parish gone mad and a country following right behind.

So tell me, how did you like the look of Clarendon’s new squad last month as they fired wildly at the police and citizens whilst taking hostages?

Look at the video over and over because this will soon become the order of the day. And it will not only be in Clarendon, but everywhere on this island.

I would like to ask the human rights activists this question: How concerned are you about the human rights of that man firing the M-16 rifle with the 100 clip magazine now? Are you worried that he may fall to police bullets? How, sir and madam, do you feel about how you have handed us over to these animals? Or does my description of those men offend you?

If you are still worried about their human rights, you will be far less so when they begin to turn it on the community you live in.

The sad thing about reaching the point where the criminals can literally do as they please without fear of some ‘squad men’ hunting them down is that we have been as bad as this before and worse, and it was squad men who turned it around.

Remember Permanent Secretary Edward “Ted” O’Gilvie, who was brutally murdered because he stood up to corruption in 1977, resulting in Anthony Brown and George Flash fleeing to Cuba?

Remember Lester Lloyd Coke, otherwise called “Jim Brown”, “Dudus” Coke’s dad actually? He hauled Jerome White out of the Darling Street Police Station in 1988 and killed him on the steps over a traffic dispute, without fear.

Remember when “Dudus” Coke was able to blatantly challenge an arrest warrant in 2010?

We have been there before, we are heading back there again.

Do not take for granted that when the Government sees they will lose elections because of public condemnation that street gangs are in control, that young men will be willing to serve and do what needs to be done. Every police officer now knows that fighting gangs the way they need to be fought is a short trip to being charged, imprisoned, or blacklisted for promotion.

Something dramatic is needed. Prime Minister Andrew Holness needs to form a super squad that is not subject to INDECOM’s authority. Harsh words need to be said, like “criminal rights activists, stay out of my way”.

Sounds farcical? Well, let me remind you of Dudley Thompson, who made the statement “No angels died at Green Bay”.

More recently, the new prime minister of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro ran on a platform that he intended to kill gang members. And he won the election.

The Philippines’ president, Rodrigo Duterte stated clearly that he intends to kill all drug dealers if they do not turn themselves in. And he is killing as we speak.

I am asking far less of our leaders.

There needs to be a stand by our leaders now, or one day soon gangs will be able to stand up against our army once more.

If not now, with the Clarendon shooting on everyone’s phone, then when?

What do our leaders need as motivation to stand up in the manner I have suggested?

Is it really going to take us achieving the 2,000-per-year homicide mark before this Government, this Opposition, this press, and this business community realise that the British model of policing cannot work here?

I congratulate the restraint shown by the police in the hostage stand-off with the gunmen in Clarendon.

It took courage and control not to return fire and endanger the hostages’ lives. Let me see similar courage demonstrated by our political leadership and an open declaration of war against the street gangs of this country, with two and only two codes — no innocent must be harmed, and destruction of the gangs by any means necessary.
