Typewriter did his swimming, then won the Derby in 2012
The year was 2012 and both keys and time were clicking for the Spencer Chung-trained Typewriter to run in the Derby.
Chung remembers well the heartaches of preparing Typewriter for his big day.
“ Typewriter had a lot of issues and as a result we were never on target with his preparation to run in the Derby.
“Then to add to all of his issues, he ( Typewriter) had a minor injury just before the running of the Jamaica Derby,” Chung revealed.
Yet despite his problems, Typewriter dismantled rivals to give his trainer a first win in the prestigious race.
“He ( Typewriter) had to win three races before the Jamaica Derby. He broke his maiden on Guineas Day. He was way behind in his preparation and so he had to be playing catch up.
“So, ‘boom’, Typewriter won three races, this was like a couple weeks before the Derby and we just made in time for the big race and we had good expectations going into the race as well,” Chung told the Supreme Racing Guide.
“At the time Typewriter got a quarter-crack on his hoof, meaning that on his back foot he had a crack on it and so he didn’t get to exercise on the racetrack for the race because of the crack.
“He went to the sea, did his swimming and then he went straight into the race and just did it, he won the Jamaica Derby,” a still exuberant Chung recalled.
As to actually winning the Derby, Chung is still ecstatic with the victory.
“Winning the Jamaica Derby is always a great day. I mean, it is every owner’s dream, every trainer’s dream to win the Jamaica Derby. If there’s no other race that is the race.
“I was pleased as can be. Typewriter went on to win the Jamaica St Leger in the same year and I think that was a great achievement by him,” Chung offered.
