PNP calls for suitable location for Police Records Office
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Opposition spokesman on national security, Fitz Jackson, is calling on the Minister of National Security, Horace Chang, to find a suitable location to temporarily house the Police Records Office.
The building, which is located on 34 Duke Street, was closed for repairs on September 15 due to poor air quality.
“Given the importance of the service to thousands of Jamaicans, I am calling on the government to put in place viable temporary measures that will safeguard the health of the workers and continue to make the service available to the public at large,” Jackson said in a press release.
He said while he appreciates the need for the immediate closure of the facility to protect the health and well-being of the police personnel, other workers and members of the public, it is disconcerting no suitable arrangements were made for the continuation of essential services.
“Many persons actually depend on the services of the Records Office and as a result this kind of disruption cannot be for any extended period. This is just another example of the callousness of the government towards the lives and livelihood of the ordinary Jamaicans,” the Opposition spokesman said.
Pointing out that Jamaicans have travelled from across the country to the records office to find its doors closed with no clear indication as to when it would be reopened, Jackson described the situation as “unfair” to the public.
“The silence from the government is unacceptable and a timetable for full resumption of the service must be made public,” the spokesman said.
