OAS weighs in on Guyana’s election announcement
The Organization of American States (OAS) says it is looking forward to the issuance of the proclamation required by Guyana’s Constitution to firmly establish the date for the election called by President David Granger.
Granger announced last week that the polls would be held on March 2, next year.
“The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) has taken note of the announcement by President David Granger that the next general and regional elections in Guyana will be held on March 2, 2020. The OAS General Secretariat underlines the importance to the people of Guyana of leaving behind the period of political uncertainty as soon as possible,” the OAS said in a statement.
In a nationwide radio and television broadcast last Wednesday night (Sept 25), Granger said he had selected the date “after discussions with the chairman of the Elections Commission and with my Cabinet”.
He said that the “earliest possible date for the holding of general and regional election will be on Monday, the second of March 2020”.
