RECORDING artistes G Whizz and Bascom X were big winners at last Friday’s SunCity 104.9 FM’s Bubble Di Pot Celebrity Cook-Off. The event, now in its sixth staging, took place inside St William Grant Park in downtown Kingston.

Participants prepared meals using products from sponsors, including LASCO, Cals Manufacturing, Juliana, and Caribbean Dreams select teas.

The Breakfast Round featured G Whizz, dancehall deejay Iwaata, and dancehall choreographers DHQ (Dancehall Queen) Nickeisha and Marvin the Beast. Miss Universe Jamaica 2019 Iana Tickle Garcia, Bascom X, and 2019 Digicel Rising Stars winner Sherlon Russell were part of the evening session.

Known for songs Life and Bartender, G Whizz teamed up with his wife Devene Coleman Rowe to take first place.

“The experience was something different and unique. It was my first time cooking in public and I did not know what to expect. But once I started, everything flowed,” G Whizz told the Jamaica Observer.

His meal comprised LASCO mackerel and a vegetable stew with fried dumplins. He also blended a smoothie using papaya, lemon juice, pineapple juice, and ripe bananas.

“My wife was definitely a big help. If it wasn’t for her, I might not have won,” he chuckled.

G-Whizz also won the sectional prize for Best-Kept Kitchen Area, and received a gift basket of Scotch-Brite products from Cari-Med Limited.

Finishing in second place was couple DHQ Nickeisha and Marvin the Beast. They were assisted by their producer, Power Icon.

“We had a lot of fun. Believe me, it was amazing,” said Nickeisha.

Third place went to Iwaata and his assistant Sharon Donaldson. They won the sectional prize for Best Sauce and received a gift basket courtesy of Cals.

The afternoon session kicked off at 2:00 pm, and participants had roughly about 45 minutes to prepare their meals.

Bascom X — known for songs, including Love You the Same Way and Lonely Girl — won first place. He was assisted by Curtis Marshall.

“Whether we win or lose, we like to show people what we can do outside of the music. The experience was great,” said Bascom X.

Second-place winner was Iana Tickle Garcia. She was assisted by her brother Kevaughn Prout. She also won the sectional prize for Best Kept Kitchen Area for the afternoon round.

Sherlon Russell finished in third place. He also walked away with the prize for Best Sauce. He was assisted by his sister, Cheriee.

Celebrities compete for cash, which they donate to a charity of their choice. The cash prizes are $25,000 (first place), second place $15,000, and $10,000 (third place).

Other sponsors included Jamaica National Small Business Loan, Gas Pro, COK Sodality Co-op Credit Union, Tijule, Distinction College, and Jus Great.
