STETHS, Seaforth look to secure second-round berths today
BRAES RIVER, St Elizabeth — Former champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Seaforth High could book their second-round spots in the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup football competition with wins today, when action continues with seven rescheduled games.
Twelve schools, led by defending champions Clarendon College, have booked their spots in the second round — Anchovy High from Zone A, Frome Technical and Rusea’s High from Zone B, Manning’s School from Zone D, Lennon High from Zone H, Annotto Bay in Zone J, McGrath and Charlemont in Zone K, Port Antonio and Happy Grove in Zone L, and Garvey Maceo and Denbigh High in Zone M.
STETHS lead Zone E with 23 points and a win today would see the seven-time champions through to the next round, as they go into their game against Sydney Pagon on a two-game winning streak. They have not conceded a goal in their last four games.
STETHS had beaten Sydney Pagon 4-0 in the first round, and another loss today would eliminate the second-year team from second-round contention.
Munro College, who are coming off a loss to STETHS on Saturday, could open up a four-point gap over third-placed Maggotty High with a win over last-placed Black River High.
Maggotty High, who beat Munro College and took a point from STETHS in a 0-0 draw in their last two games, have two games in hand and are in the race for one of the automatic spots.
Seaforth High have not lost to Paul Bogle since the 2015 season and can top Zone O with a win today, after playing to a 0-0 draw in the first round.
Seaforth are on 19 points, four more than Paul Bogle High, with third-placed St Thomas High four points further adrift.
In Zone N, the winner of the game between Old Harbour High and Vere Technical — both on eight points — will go to the top of the points table with leaders Central High, who are not playing today after being upset by Foga Road on Saturday.
