Reggae Girlz look to end on high
THEY may have already secured Group B honours, but Assistant Coach Lorne Donaldson and his Reggae Girlz are aiming to end the Concacaf Women’s Olympic Caribbean qualifiers with a highquality showing against US Virgin Islands today at 6:30 pm.
The eliminated pair of Cuba and St Lucia will meet in the 4:00 pm curtain- raiser at the National Stadium. The Girlz gave the small turnout at the National Stadium much to cheer about with 12-1, 7-0 and 11-0 wins over Cuba, Barbados and St Lucia, respectively. And by all indications today’s contest should bring another wide margin of victory.
While the scorelines have been handsome, the Jamaicans — on nine points with 31 goals to their name and one against — have been guilty of losing their shape at times when complacency sets in. It was particularly evident in Sunday’s contest against St Lucia.
It is on those grounds that Donaldson – who is overseeing these qualifiers in Hue Menzies’ absence – has called for a better execution from his squad, built around a core of players who represented the country at the World Cup.
“Moving into the last game, we just want to make sure that we play at a level that depicts our quality,” Donaldson declared.
“We have set a high standard for ourselves and we want to ensure that we live up to that. We don’t want to play down to the next team’s level, we want to move the ball and finish on set pieces and we want to maintain a very high tempo when we are in control of the game,” the tactician told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.
Donaldson pointed to the importance of keeping players healthy throughout this phase of competition, and as such, hinted at the possibility of another series of changes to the starting line-up.
“Again, we are aware that it is the last game and the last thing we want is to come out here with injured players, so we are trying to protect against injury.
“So if it is time to save some players, then we will do that, because some players have to go back to Europe. It is our job to try to keep them safe so that they can go back to their respective clubs in good shape,” Donaldson reasoned.
Though only of academic interest second-placed Cuba, on six points, should maintain that position at the end of today’s fixtures. Barbados are third on six points, while fourth-placed St Lucia have three points. US Virgin Islands are likely to end pointless given the uphill task against the Jamaicans.
Elsewhere, hosts Trinidad and Tobago are in danger of being eliminated from Group A, as they are currently third on six points with a tough contest against second-placed Dominican Republic (seven points) today.
Leaders St Kitts and Nevis, also on seven points and a superior goal difference, are favoured to maintain pole position, as their final contest is against the already eliminated Antigua and Barbuda.
Over in Group C, hosts Puerto Rico and Haiti were yesterday scheduled to decide group honours at the Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium in Bayamón.
Only the three group winners will advance to the final round, where they will meet the United States, Mexico, Canada and others, to vie for the top two spots to represent Concacaf at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
