MALDON, St James — Cornwall College became the 18th school to confirm their place in the second round of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup football competition after a 3-0 win over Maldon High in their rescheduled Zone A return-round game yesterday.

Cornwall College resume leadership of Zone A on goal difference over Anchovy High, who had booked their spot on Saturday with both schools tied on 20 points each.

Another five schools just missed advancing to the second round, however, including William Knibb Memorial in Zone C, Petersfield High in Zone D, Brown’s Town and Oracabessa in Zone I, and Paul Bogle in Zone O, while Frome Technical High and St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) confirmed winning their respective zones after picking up three more points.

Cornwall College, last season’s beaten finalists, join Anchovy High from Zone A, Frome Technical and Rusea’s High from Zone B, Manning’s School from Zone D, STETHS from Zone E, Manchester High and B B Coke from Zone F, Clarendon College and Lennon High from Zone H, Annotto Bay High from Zone J, McGrath High and Charlemont High from Zone K, Port Antonio High and Happy Grove from Zone L, Garvey Maceo High and Denbigh High from Zone M, and Seaforth High from Zone O.

Yesterday, Solano Birch scored his first two goals of the season to lead the charge for the 12-time champions, while Kamali Powell scored his sixth goal of the season.

Former champions Frome Technical and STETHS were both winners as well to wrap up their respective zones.

Giovanni Mitoo took his goal tally to 14 after he scored a brace for Frome Technical in their 4-0 win over Hopewell High to end their schedule on an unassailable 21 points in Zone B.

Rusea’s High beat Merlene Ottey High 3-0 in their Zone B game.

STETHS raced to 29 points in Zone E after beating Black River High 3-0 for their fourth win in the last nine days, and are 11 points clear of second-placed Munro College, who have a game in hand.

Zone C will go down to the wire with four teams separated by three points after William Knibb Memorial and Cedric Titus played out a 2-2 draw in Clarks Town, while Herbert Morrison Technical beat Holland High 2-0 in Montego Bay.

William Knibb Memorial rallied from a goal down to lead 2-1 at half -ime but gave up a late goal to Cedric Titus and are on 13 points from six games, two more than Herbert Morrison, who have played seven games. Spot Valley High (eight games) and Cedric Titus (seven games) are both on 10 points.

Oracabessa High continued their surge to the top of the points table in Zone I after a 2-1 win over York Castle, their fourth victory in a row, to improve to 19 points and have one foot in the second round.

Ocho Rios High rebounded from back to back losses with a 7-0 win over Iona High where Marlon Allen scored five times to move to 16 points, one behind second-placed Brown’s Town, who were held 0-0 by Marcus Garvey High.

The race for second spot in Zone D is also close after second-placed Petersfield High and third-placed Belmont played out a 0-0 draw and are separated by two points.

Leaders Manning’s School increased their margin with a 1-0 win over Grange Hill and are on 25 points, nine more than Petersfield’s 16, with Belmont on 14.
