Reggae Girlz stroll to easy 7-0 victory over US Virgin Islands
Jamaica’s
Reggae Girlz dismissed the United States Virgin Island’s 7-0 at the National
Stadium on Tuesday evening in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) stage of the
Olympic Games qualifiers and advanced to the CONCACAF round.
The Reggae Girlz were led by captain Khadija Shaw, who scored five goals as she netted in the sixth, 14th, 20th, 28th and 64th minutes, to reach 40 international goals for Jamaica.
Cheyna
Matthews and Trudi Carter scored the other goals as they allowed Jamaica to top
the points standing in Group B of the CFU round of matches.
Before the first whistle, the Reggae Girlz had secured their place in the CONCACAF round, as in the first match Cuba defeated St Lucia 6-1, to join Jamaica on nine points, but with an inferior goal difference. That result meant that the Reggae Girlz had booked their place, as only the winner of the group advanced.
In the
CONCACAF round, Jamaica join giants the United States of America, Canada and
Mexico, along with the two other Caribbean qualifiers, St Kitts and Nevis and
Haiti, as well as Central America qualifiers Costa Rica and Panama.
The top two
after the round-robin format of the CONCACAF stage will qualify for the Olympic
Games next year in Tokyo, Japan.
