2019 NFL Week 6: 49ers to test mettle at Los Angeles Rams
The list of undefeated NFL teams dwindles each week but the defending champion New England Patriots (5-0) along with the San Francisco 49ers (4-0) appear to be improving game by game.
While the Patriots are surprising no one, the 49ers were 4-12 last season and are 4-0 for the first time since 1990. They visit the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday as JustBet five-point underdogs where their mettle will be put to the test. Don’t miss it.
On the other hand, there are four winless teams that appear to be imploding with every snap of the ball — Washington Redskins (0-5), Cincinnati Bengals (0-5), New York Jets (0-4), and Miami Dolphins (0-4). While the Dolphins have gutted their franchise in preparation for a rebuilding strategy, the Jets, Bengals, and Redskins are losing without purpose or any semblance of a plan for the future.
As far as the Redskins are concerned, Head Coach Jay Gruden’s tenure was abruptly terminated before sunrise Monday morning following their lopsided 33-7 home loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday. Gruden must have imagined better success than the 35-49-1 record that he achieved in Washington during the past five-plus years but, the 20-plus players who finished the previous two seasons on injured reserve and the additional 10 on the list this season, contributed significantly to the lack of production.
The sad truth is, the NFL is truly a production-based business and Gruden just didn’t get it done.
The Redskins travel to Miami to tackle the Dolphins on Sunday afternoon and the team that displays the least ineptitude will walk away with their first win of the season. Not much resistance is expected but, then again, not much production either.
On the subject of production, two of this season’s high-octane offences were surprisingly held in check last Sunday. The Green Bay Packers obliterated the Dallas Cowboys in the first half on the road and the Kansas City Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season after their lowest scoring game in the Patrick Mahomes era.
Dallas, in their first three games this season, averaged 32.3 points per game but have averaged only 17 points over the last two weeks against the New Orleans Saints and Packers, respectively. Whatever was going right for the Cowboys’ offence has started to go terribly wrong. Granted, quarterback (QB) Dak Prescott ended up throwing for 463 yards in his desperate bid to rally Dallas back from 31-3, but he turned the ball over three times and the offence didn’t start clicking until it was far too late to recover — They lost 34-24.
The Cowboys travel to New York on Sunday to take on the lowly Jets as JustBet nine-point favourites and must use this opportunity for a return to form. Prescott showed flashes of his talent in the defeat last Sunday but must maintain consistency and establish the run-game in order to get back on track. Expect a dominant Cowboy performance and the Jets falling to 0-5.
The typically explosive Chiefs offence was held to just 13 points at home in a stunning loss to the Indianapolis Colts last weekend. The Colts scored only 19 points in their first-ever victory over the Chiefs, but their defence was relentless and the Chiefs’ 25-game streak of 25 points or more was broken.
Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes was sacked four times (three total sacks in the first four games) and hit eight times by the Colts’ ruthless resistance. The Chiefs are again at home this Sunday as eight-point JustBet favourites against the Houston Texans (3-2) and their offensive line will need to provide better protection for the young QB if a win is expected.
The Texans, however, should not be taken lightly, especially following their 53-32 annihilation of the Atlanta Falcons in Week 5. QB Deshaun Watson’s stat line was near perfect: 426 passing yards, five touchdowns, no picks, and a 158.3 passer rating.
While it’s inconceivable that the Kansas City fans will witness back-to-back home defeats, this should be a close encounter with the Chiefs having a slight edge due to the crowd support.
