Sharen Reid, the wife of embattled former Education Minister Ruel Reid, was advised by senior parish judge, Vaughn Smith, to take a vacation from the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) in order to abide by her bail conditions.

Reid, who is charged with conspiracy to defraud and possession of criminal property, was granted bail Thursday (Oct 10) in the sum of $1 million with one or two sureties and ordered to surrender her travel documents. A stop order was also placed against her. She will also have to report to the Matilda’s Corner Police Station every Wednesday and Saturday. Another bail condition imposed on Reid was that she must not be seen at the CMU or the Ministry of Education. Attorney Carolyn Chuck informed the court that Mrs Reid was still employed as a manager at the CMU so the last bail condition would pose a problem.

“The investigations have been going on for several months now and she has been still working there,” Chuck said.

Judge Smith then consulted with the prosecution if they were opposed to Reid still being employed at the CMU.

“We are asking that your honour impose a condition that she will not be there,” senior Clerk of Court Hansurd Lawson replied.

Chuck still persisted and appealed even further but Judge Smith was not impressed. “The circumstances have changed. She has now been charged. Now would be the perfect time for her to take some leave,” the judge advised.

Reids’ husband Ruel and daughter Sharelle, had the same bail conditions imposed on them. They were granted bail in the sums of $3 million and $500,000 respectively. President of the CMU, Fritz Pinnock, was granted bail in the sum of $2 million and Councillor for the Browns Town Division in St Ann Kim Brown-Lawrence was granted bail in the sum of $1 million. Pinnock will report to the Greater Portmore Police while Brown Lawrence will report to the Browns Town police.

All five were ordered fingerprinted.
