Teams vie for remaining daCosta Cup 2nd-round spots
The remaining four spots in the second round of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup football competition are to be decided today as the return round ends with a seven-game schedule.
Seven schools are chasing tickets to the second round, set to start Wednesday. They are Herbert Morrison Technical and Cedric Titus in Zone C; Maggotty High and Munro College in Zone E; and three schools are chasing one spot in Zone O.
Green Pond High have taken one of the two best third-place spots after amassing 19 points in Zone A for a 1.9 average which cannot be topped by another third placed team in Pool 1.
Today, while they have already secured their places, Vere Technical and Central High, tied on 13 points at the top of Zone N, will meet at Effortville Community Centre to decide the zone winners.
Vere Technical, who won the first-round game 1-0, lead on goal-difference hence a draw would see them take zone honours, and the extra ranking points that goes with it.
Calculators might be needed in Zone O where as many as three teams are still in the hunt for the runner-up spot behind Seaforth High.
Paul Bogle are currently in second place on 16 points after stalling over their last three games, and failing to score a goal while earning just one point.
St Thomas Technical need a win over long shots Robert Lightbourne today to avenge their slim 2-3 loss in the first round, and move past Paul Bogle in the points tables.
Robert Lightbourne, who beat Paul Bogle and St Thomas Technical, are extreme long shots to advance, but they hold the fate of both teams in their hands. They can finish second as well, but would have to beat St Thomas Technical by double digits to edge out Paul Bogle.
In Zone C, it’s simple: Herbert Morrison must beat Zone C winners William Knibb to advance ahead of Cedric Titus.
Cedric Titus finished their schedule on 13 points, two more than Herbert Morrison who were thrashed 4-0 by William Knibb in the first round in Montego Bay.
Both Maggotty High and Munro College, who played out a 0-0 result on Saturday, could advance from Zone E. One could take second place and the other the best third place with wins over Sydney Pagon and Newell High, respectively.
Maggotty High are in second place and a win would see them advance as the second-placed team on 24 points. If Munro College win they would improve to 22 points and an average of 1.83 would be good enough for the other third-place spot.
Anything but wins for the favoured Maggotty and Munro College would send the organisers to the calculators.
