CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — Former champions Cornwall College, Dinthill Technical, as well as first-time qualifiers Anchovy High and McGrath High scored wins as the quarter-finals of the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup football competition got under way with six of eight games yesterday.

Cornwall College snapped Garvey Maceo’s unbeaten run for the second time with a 1-0 win at Juici Park in Clarendon to take charge of Group Two, while Dinthill Technical continued their late run edging Port Antonio High 1-0 at Dinthill in their Group Three game.

Meanwhile, high-flying St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Manchester High were held goalless by unheralded teams B B Coke High and Maggotty High, respectively.

Today, defending champions Clarendon College will play their first quarter-final game when they take on Manning’s School in the first game of a double-header at Frome Sports Complex, while Westmoreland neighbours Petersfield High and Frome Technical meet in the second game.

Clarendon College are on a tear, winning seven straight games and eliminating Green Pond High 8-1 on aggregate in the second round, but will take on a Manning’s School team that has given up a miserly three goals in 12 games played and who will be in familiar territory at Frome.

Roderick Granville and Tajhay Williams have both scored twice for Clarendon College in second-round games against Green Pond and will be expected to lead the attack today.

Antonio Wagstaff leads the Manning’s scoring and the team will hope Tavar Thompson and Abijah Wallace will give support.

The clash between Petersfield High and Frome Technical is expected to be a fierce one, as both will be seeking to go one step better than they did last year.

Petersfield made it all the way to the final of the Ben Francis knockout while Frome were daCosta Cup semi-finalists.

Yesterday, Calvin Stephens’ 15th-minute header from a cross form Solano Birch was the difference for Cornwall College, as they beat Garvey Maceo High at this stage for the second-straight season.

The win gave Cornwall College the lead in Group Two after Manchester High and Maggotty High played out a 0-0 draw at St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex in Santa Cruz.

Manchester High came into the game on the back of an 8-0 thrashing of St Thomas Technical in their return-leg, second-round game on Saturday, and snapped a 12-game run this season where they scored at least one goal.

Karim Bryan scored the winning goal for Dinthill Technical as they beat Port Antonio High 1-0 and ran their win streak to four games, and are yet to concede a goal over the period.

At Jarrett Park, Mark Smith scored in his third-straight game to lead Anchovy High to a 1-0 win over Cedric Titus in their Group One game.

Smith scored in the 11th minute for Anchovy High, who got into the quarter-finals for the first time.

McGrath High also celebrated their first-time qualification in the third round with a 1-0 win over Happy Grove, with Tyrese Wright scoring the winner as they took the lead in Group Four after favourites STETHS were held 0-0 by B B Coke High at Manchester High.
