Kuzikk looks to Atomic
Kamau Imhotep, member of the group Kuzikk, is confident that their second single will bring a different flair to dancehall.
“Atomic is just pure, hardcore dancehall. Although it has hard-hitting lyrics, everybody will be able to hear it because we were able to make it suitable for all age groups. Unfortunately today, many dancehall songs are not palatable, but we managed to make Atomic lyrical, fluent and clean,” the singer told the Jamaica Observer.
The track that dropped last Friday was mixed and mastered by Rohan Dwyer and produced by Malakhii Records. It will have an official launch at Ultimate Ultra Lounge in New Kingston tonight.
Imhotep added that he was immediately captivated by the dancehall rhythm the song was voiced on, and even formulated its hook with little effort.
“We were in the studio and sometimes we say a riddim ‘speaks to us’…well this one really hit me. I realised that dancehall was a part of my life just as much as roots-reggae growing up and right after hearing that riddim the hook just hit me and I couldn’t let it go because it was so lyrical or ‘wicked’, as we say,” he said.
Kuzikk, which comprises Kamau Imhotep (Horace Morgan), JohnnyKool (Dalbert Wright) and KrysiWebb (Krystal Webb), made their debut in July with roots-reggae song One People produced by Finnish label, StudioRed.
This is not the first time Kamau Imhotep has been part of a group. From 2003 to 2014 he was a member of Dubtonic Kru, known for numbers like Trap, World Crisis and Jah Love. It was also proclaimed Best New Band in the World 2010-2011, at the Global Battle of the Bands competition.
He subsequently went solo for four years, producing a seven-track album titled Sight a Revolution in 2016 and other singles like Jah Jah Soldier and Chill.
He explained that he is content with the members of this new group, who decided to come together late last year as it was felt that they complement each other.
“Krysi has a golden, sultry voice but she can also deejay. It’s the same for me; I can sing just about every genre but I deejay and Johnny deejays as well, but he also has a nice baritone voice. The uniqueness of our group lies within the talent of each member. We also do backup for one another, so that’s the beauty of it,” he said.
