Guyanese in low-lying areas on high-tide warning
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — The Civil Defence Commission (CDC), has issued an alert about expected spring tides that will be higher than expected.
The spring tides are set to begin today thought to next week Wednesday. The tides could reach a height of more than 3.31 metres.
According to the CDC, residents in low-lying communities and those communities near to the sea wall have been asked to take all necessary precautions against possible flooding.
The CDC is also calling on those residents to report any breaches in the sea or river defences and to ensure they unplug all electrical items and take their livestock to a higher ground when the spring tides begin.
Residents in low-lying areas have also been urged to stay alert and take all necessary precaution as Guyana will experience unusual high tides over the weekend.
Guyana is particularly vulnerable to sea level rise and close to 80 per cent of the population lives in the low–lying coastal region.
Based on this, Georgetown relies on sea walls for protection and the Ministry of Public Works frequently issues alerts during particularly high spring tides, so residents can take precautions against flooding.
