Manning Cup decides six quarterfinalists on Saturday
Six teams
will be eliminated from the ISSA/Digicel schoolboy football Manning Cup
competition on Saturday with four taking an advantageous position into their
second-leg match at four venues across the Corporate Area.
These should
have been the final matches in the second round, but with two first-leg matches
affected by rain at Spanish Town Prison Oval midweek, the decision of who will
advance to the quarter-finals round will be made at a later date.
The venue
chosen for the eight matches are Ashenheim Stadium, Stadium East, Winchester
Park and Spanish Town Prison Oval. Two matches will be played at each.
The four
teams that have already given themselves an advantage of advancing to the quarterfinals
are defending champions Kingston College (KC), as well as three former
champions, Wolmer’s, Excelsior and St George’s College.
In the first
legs, KC rallied from a first-half deficit to beat Vauxhall 3-1; Wolmer’s
tagged St Catherine 1-0; Excelsior beat Jonathan Grant 3-0; and St George’s
stopped Mona 2-1.
The two
other completed first-leg matches drew with former champions St Andrew
Technical High and Eltham ending 2-2 and former champions Camperdown and Holy
Trinity finishing 0-0. All four will have everything to play for on Saturday.
In the
matches that were affected by rain, St Jago and Charlie Smith played 13 minutes
before the rain started with either failing to score during the period. Former
champions Jamaica College and Hydel did not take the field as it was
waterlogged. All four will do battle for supremacy.
