The Jamaica Observer continues its ‘Reggae 50’ feature on people, organisations, and events that have made an impact on reggae over the past 50 years.
— The lyrics, “Cold ground was my bed last night and rock was my pillow too”, from Bob Marley’s 1973 song Talking Blues, was lifted from Mojo Hand, a song recorded 13 years earlier by American blues guitarist Lightnin’ Hopkins.
— Guitarist Hux Brown, bass guitarist Jackie Jackson and percussionist Denzil Laing (father of broadcaster/ copyright specialist Tony Laing) played on Paul Simon, the second solo album by singer/songwriter Paul Simon. Partially recorded at Dynamic Sounds in Kingston, the set was released in 1972.
— Eric Clapton’s 1975 album, There’s One in Every Crowd, was partially recorded at Dynamic Studios in Kingston. — Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards played on Black Uhuru’s 1979 hit song, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. — Another Cycle, Jimmy Cliff’s 1971 album, was recorded at the famed Muscle Shoals Studio in Alabama. It contains the hit song, Sitting in Limbo.
— Though known for his prowess on bass, Robbie Shakespeare is a competent guitarist. Among the songs he played guitar on are I Know Myself by Ernest Wilson, John Holt’s Up Park Camp and Sitting and Watching by Dennis Brown. Shakespeare also played piano on MPLA, The Revolutionaries’ instrumental.
— Keyboardist Earl “Wire” Lindo (best known for his work with The Wailers) and percussionist Larry McDonald were members of American blues guitarist Taj Mahal’s band.
— Natty Dread, released in 1974, is the first Bob Marley album that featured harmony group, the I Three.
— The Rolling Stones signed Peter Tosh to their label after the April 1978 One Love Peace Concert in Kingston. Lead singer Mick Jagger attended.
— Guitarist Noel “Sowell” Bailey of the Roots Radics Band and producer Michael “Mikey” Dread Campbell worked on Sandinista!, The Clash’s classic 1980 album, which was partially recorded at Channel One studio in Kingston.
— LaToya Jackson co-wrote two songs (Brown Eyes and American Street) from Cliff Hanger, Jimmy Cliff’s 1985 album, which won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Recording the following year.
— Til Shiloh, Buju Banton’s epic 1995 album, was distributed by Loose Cannon Records, an independent label owned by American Lisa Cortes. She left the music business for a career in films, and co-produced Precious, the movie that won two Academy Awards in 2010, including Best Supporting Actress for Mo’nique.
