Prosecutor, parents charged in case of 19 missing firearms
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A prosecutor and her parents were on Monday granted bail when they appeared in the St James Parish Court, shortly after being charged in connection with the disappearance of 19 firearms and about 150 rounds of assorted ammunition from a private security company operated by the family in May.
The accused, Clerk of Courts Tara Morgan, 36, of a Kingston address, was charged with 20 counts of breaching Section 26 of the Firearms Act, while her parents — Pauline Smith, 69 and Courtney Morgan, 68, who both live in St James — were both charged with operating a security company without a licence.
A usually impeccable police source close to the case told the Jamaica Observer that the firearms were registered in the name of the daughter, while the parents were charged with breaches of the Private Security Regulations Authority Act. They allegedly failed to renew the licence to operate the security company.
The daughter was granted bail in the sum of $400,000, with one or two securities, and is to report to Duhaney Park Police Station every Saturday; while the mother and father, who were each granted bail in the sum of $200,000 with one or two securities, are to report to Granville Police Station, St James, every Saturday.
The three were also ordered to surrender their travel documents by Parish Court Judge Kacia Grant.
The accused, who are represented by attorney Roy Fairclough, are to return to court on Thursday, December 19.
The allegations in the case are that between the evening of Thursday, May 23 and the afternoon of Friday, May 24, criminals made off with 19 firearms, including 15 revolvers and four shotguns; and about 150 rounds of assorted ammunition from the private security company.
It was also reported that the security firm, which is located in Ironshore Industrial Estate, was locked up by its owner Thursday evening, with the weapons and ammunition safely put away.
According to the police, upon the owner’s return to the establishment about 6:00 pm the following day, he discovered that two padlocks were removed from the door and that the building was forcibly entered into.
Police said after inspecting the building it was found that a safe with the firearms and ammunition was broken into and all the items stolen.
